The Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston offers many opportunities for catechists to grow into effective educators of the faith and assets to the faith formation of their parish.
Knowing that they need to fill vacancies in the parish's catechetical programs makes it necessary for pastors to appoint parishioners as catechists without previous formation for that ministry. Although a catechist certificate is not a not a pre-requirement to start in catechetical ministry, it is key to success.
However, it is essential that all who exercise catechetical ministry take it very seriously and commit to engage in their own process of formation and actively pursue a full catechist certificate through our Archdiocesan Office of Evangelization and catechesis.

Parish Catechist CertificateThere are three levels of the:

Although you are not required to complete the levels or the courses that make up each level in a specific sequence, they key programs you are asked to complete are:
- Formation Towards Christian Ministry (F.T.C.M.): 9 theological content courses that introduces catechist to an overview of the teachings of the Catholic Church.
- Catechetical Modules: 10 pedagogical trainings (two-hour each) that trains catechists on how to teach implementing the Disciple Forming Lesson Sequence developed by our archdiocese.
- Elective training: 20 clock hours of training of your choice, preferably on catechesis, theology, pedagogy, sacramental preparation, or any other issues specific to your own ministry.
- Catechesis of Human Sexuality Course: A three-hour course that will enable catechists to familiarize themselves with the teachings of the catholic church regarding human sexuality.

APPLYING FOR CATECHIST CERTIFICATE OR ITS RENEWALFOR PARISH CATECHISTS ONLY:

- Due to the transition to a new Capernaum platform, we require that an application be completed.
- It is required to have an up-to-date Capernaum account where our office can verify all the information of courses that you submit as part of your application.
- Certificates are posted on your Capernaum account, as well as printed and mailed to your home. Please make sure that your address on your Capernaum account is updated.
- BEFORE SUBMITTING AN APPLICATION, please make sure that all your training is properly displayed in your Capernaum account as "completed".
- If you need help updating your account or need help to make sure all your courses are properly credited on your Capernaum account, please complete the following form:

Certificate RenewalIf you have received your Catechist Certificate Level 3, you are expected to renew it every three years.
The requirement to renew your Catechist Certificate is to complete a total of 30-hours (over three years) of one of or a combination of the following:- Elective training on spirituality, theology and/or catechesis
- Guided prayer experiences like retreats or workshops

All parish catechists and Catholic School Personnel must have all their formation records up to date in their own personal CAPERNAUM ACCOUNT.
Capernaum is the name of the digital Learning Management System of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston.
It is named after the ancient city referenced in the gospels as the place where Jesus formed his disciples.
