The Archdiocese of Galveston has a deep heritage as one of the oldest dioceses in the U.S. with a rich diversity that reflects today's Catholic Church.
While the history of the Catholic faith in Texas began when the Spanish explorers and missionaries arrived in the 16th century, the Archdiocese has continued to pray and celebrate the Gospel message in a multitude of ways since its founding in 1847. Today the Archdiocese continues to participate in activities of social justice, support the good works of persons in other countries, prepare our children and young people to be responsible members of the community — and we do all this in the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ.
Our parishes, ministries, schools and communities are vibrant in faith, service and the Gospel message.
The Archdiocese offers extensive resources to credentialed members of digital, print and broadcast news media on the events, people and parishes that make up the Archdiocese, one of the largest and most ethnically diverse in the United States. We offer many story ideas, subject matter experts and locations.- Any media wanting to film or photograph on any Archdiocesan property, including parish churches, schools, pastoral facilities and other locations, must obtain permissions.

The Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston serves more than 1.7 million Catholics in 10 counties. It is the largest Roman Catholic diocese in Texas and the 5th largest in the United States.
The Archdiocese has the largest private school system in Texas, with more than 17,500-plus students enrolled in 56 schools throughout the counties of the Archdiocese. Archdiocesan schools, all of which offer need-based tuition assistance for students, serve students PreK-3 through 12th grade.

is the first and oldest diocese in Texas, established by Pope Pius IX in 1847, when Galveston was named the mother diocese of the Lone Star State.
is home to the only cardinal in the Southern United States. Daniel Cardinal DiNardo was elevated to the College of Cardinals in 2007.
includes 147 parishes in 10 counties: Harris, Galveston, Fort Bend, Brazoria, Montgomery, Austin, Grimes, San Jacinto, Walker and Waller.
has 431 priests, 389 religious sisters, 4 religious brothers and 427 permanent deacons.
includes some of Texas' largest parishes, such as: Epiphany of Our Lord parish in Katy, with 7,029 registered families; Sacred Heart in Conroe, with 7,034 families; and St. Laurence in Sugar Land, with 7,935 families. St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in northwest Houston is the largest parish in the Archdiocese, with 9,288 families. At least 20 other parishes have 3,500 families or more.

is one of the largest social service providers in Texas, offering specialized children’s services, housing programs, food banks, protective shelters, transitional houses, immigration and refugee programs and countless other ministries to people in need. In fiscal 2024, more than 4.4 million pounds of food was distributed through Catholic Charities to families in need in Harris, Fort Bend and Galveston counties. People of all creeds and backgrounds were served at local Catholic hospitals, health care centers, social services agencies, daycare centers, schools and the Archdiocesan nursing care facility.
oversees the largest private school system in Texas. More than 17,500 students are educated in the Archdiocese’s 56 Catholic schools, which includes 43 diocesan grade schools, six private elementary schools and 12 private high schools.
is one of the fastest-growing Archdioceses in the nation, welcoming more than 2,650 new Catholics over Easter weekend in April 2025.
