The formation of parish youth ministry leadership is a major priority of the Archdiocesan Office of Adolescent Catechesis and Evangelization. Whether full-time, part-time, or volunteer the formation of individuals who work with youth is a critical component in the development of successful parish programs and safe places for young people to gather and feel welcomed.

Connect offers Youth Ministry and Parish Catechetical Leaders (both salaried and volunteer leaders) the chance to connect with peers from throughout the Archdiocese for prayer, discussion of ministry topics, and networking.
Connect is open to all youth ministry adult leaders and is absolutely free (lunch included for those who RSVP). Those who would like to attend need to contact the OACE administrative assistant to register at least three days before the event. The Sanctus Renovo Retreat is a retreat for all parish catechetical leaders and volunteers within the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston who work with younger and older adolescents. During these two days, the retreatants are directed by a leader from the national field of Catholic youth ministry.
The Youth Ministry Essentials Certificate (YMEC) is designed to provide Youth Ministry Leaders (Paid and Volunteer) with the knowledge and skills essential for effectively coordinating and implementing youth ministry in their parish. This program is required for all youth ministry leaders and must be completed in the first 2 years of being in their position. Equivalencies for courses/classes taken in other dioceses or educational institution may be requested by contacting Brian Henritze.

As professional members of a parish/school staff, it is important for us to seek out continuing formation to help us in our ministry to young people. Professional Growth Days are centered on addressing current and relevant topics relating to youth ministry. They are a time to learn from experts as well as co-workers in the field. In addition, they provide a collaborating network with other parish/school leaders and promote the sharing of best practices.

Creating a Sacred Space, Retreat Formation Program provides parish retreat teams, PCLs, adult volunteers, and teens with valuable tools needed to conduct retreat ministry for youth, young adults, and family programs. The program, which is required by all who conduct retreats within the Archdiocese, focuses on the components of comprehensive youth ministry to provide a framework that will meet the needs of young people in a retreat setting.
The program is open to all high school youth, youth leaders, core team members, and volunteers who want to learn more about retreat ministry. Parish, school, and deanery leaders who wish to have this formation on their sites should contact the Office of Adolescent Catechesis and Evangelization for scheduling and costs. A minimum of 20 participants is needed to host the program.
Human Sexuality catechesis course is a two-hour course that encompass a basic understanding of the content of human sexuality catechesis and offers catechist skills and resources specific for the age of their learners.
We'll cover the Archdiocesan Norms, Guidelines, and Resources for Lifelong Human Sexuality Catechesis that will provide all parishes and Catholic schools with systematic formation in human sexuality for all ages from early childhood through adulthood.
Catechists teaching human sexuality are asked to attend a specifically designed catechist formation in human sexuality. This formation will consist of completing the Archdiocesan Moral Teachings course and attending an age-specific sexuality catechesis course. The combination of the two formation courses will provide the catechist with a strong foundation in understanding the Church's teachings for living the moral life as well as offering practical skills and resources needed for catechizing one's specific age group.
The Archbishop has established that in this Archdiocese the normative age at which those baptized as infants into the Catholic Church receive the Sacrament of Confirmation in the 10th or 11th grade.
The Office of Adolescent Catechesis and Evangelization provides formation opportunities for new Confirmation coordinators, emphasizing sacramental theology, and Confirmation catechesis and program administration. Coordinator training is also available to help design and implement Confirmation retreats, develop service opportunities, form sponsors, assist Confirmation candidates with vocational discernment, and work to engage the entire faith community in Confirmation catechesis.
This formation is also offered to all catechists in ministry with Confirmation candidates. This formation offers catechists a theological basis for current Confirmation pastoral practices as well as practical catechetical methods to prepare adolescent candidates in immediate preparation for Confirmation.
OACE offers staff and core team workshops to enhance team dynamics and service to parishioners. These workshops cover topics such as developing emotional intelligence, exploring and applying the thresholds of faith, and the apostolate of spiritual accompaniment. We also offer "The Six Working Geniuses Model" developed by Patrick Lencioni and "The Table Group". Recognizing that the Quinceañera celebration is a tradition of the Hispanic family, the parish is urged to utilize this celebration as an opportunity for welcoming and evangelizing the family toward a closer union with God and the Church. The Office of Adolescent Catechesis and Evangelization offers training for parish Quinceañera teams with this perspective in mind. The training includes information on the historical basis for the celebration, models of preparation, models for forming parish teams, music, Eucharistic celebration, and other elements related to this traditional Catholic celebration. Jeremiah 1:7 is an Archdiocesan safe environment program that provides formation for high school-age youth who assist adults in ministry to children and youth under the age of 18.
Included in this site is a training schedule and site locations for high school-age youth as well as for those qualified and approved adults wanting to be trained as program facilitators. All adult program facilitators must first be approved through the Archdiocesan approval process.
Parish Catechetical Leaders (PCL), DREs and CYMs, utilizing this program are asked to carefully read and follow the links for procedures, forms, and handouts.

El Certificado Básico en Pastoral con Adolescentes es un programa de entrenamiento para Líderes de adolescentes que es proveído en español con el contexto de la comunidad Hispano/Latino. Esta formación es beneficial para líderes adultos que trabajan con adolescentes en la parroquia, en movimiento, en grupo de oración o cualquier grupo que forman adolescentes en la fe. La Pastoral con Adolescentes Parroquial es una colaboración de muchos grupos que funciona como pastoral de conjunto. Cada grupo es parte de la “Iglesia que es una”.
