WYD 2027: Sneak Peek Meeting
The next World Youth Day will be held in Seoul, S. Korea, in August 2027, and the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston is hosting a trip! All young adults (ages 18-39) are invited to join in an online meeting on March 10 at 7:30 pmto get a sneak peek at our plans for attending WYD 2027.
World Youth Day is an event that was initiated by St. John Paul II in 1985 and is meant to gather Catholic young people from around the world for several days of prayer, catechesis, and community. The event typically occurs once every 3 years, and the location moves each time so that pilgrims can visit new parts of the world. The pope always attends along with many bishops, priests, and religious from around the world. World Youth Day typically attracts anywhere from 500,000 to 2 million young people from all over the globe. It is a true experience of the universal Church.
The last World Youth Day was in Lisbon, Portugal, in 2023.
What happens at World Youth Day? There are several key activities that happen within the World Youth Day event.
Morning Catechesis Sessions: In the mornings during World Youth Day, gather with young people who speak your language for catechesis sessions led by bishops, priests, and popular Catholic speakers. These sessions include music, testimonials, Mass, and other devotions.
Free Time to Explore: World Youth Day moves locations with every offering as a chance for young Catholics to immerse themselves in a culture that is not their own. An important part of the WYD trip includes free time to explore the local city and learn more about the host country.
Way of the Cross with Pope Leo: During every World Youth Day, the pope leads WYD pilgrims in a meditation on the Stations of the Cross. This meditation usually includes a reenactment that reflects the culture of the host country. The cross used in this meditation is an icon of World Youth Day.
Walking Pilgrimage: On Saturday of WYD, participants embark on a true pilgrimage by walking anywhere from 7-15 miles to arrive at the site for the Overnight Vigil. The hike is a moment of physical exertion that unites the modern-day pilgrims with pilgrims of Jesus day who would walk to Jerusalem for various feasts, especially the Passover.
Overnight Vigil: With all 500,000 to 2 million pilgrims in one place, the overnight vigil is a true experience. Pilgrims from all over the world first meet for a moment of prayer with Eucharistic adoration, led by Pope Leo, followed by a night under the stars.
Closing Mass with Pope Leo: On Sunday morning, join Pope Leo and your fellow pilgrims for the closing Mass of World Youth Day. This is celebrated on the same field from the overnight vigil.
World Youth Day is a moment of encounter with the universal Church. It is truly a blessed experience that every young person should embark upon! Please join us!
Pope Francis chose Seoul, S. Korea, as the site of the next World Youth Day event at the end of the previous event in Lisbon in 2023. There are many reasons to travel as pilgrims to S. Korea. All pilgrims attending the trip with the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston will be guided through our pilgrimage company, Verso Ministries, in learning more about the history of the Catholic Church in Korea. We will learn more about the Korean saints and martyrs, especially St. Andrew Kim and his companions. The Catholic Church came to Korea through the work of lay missionaries. We will visit many sites that have played an important role of the Catholic Church developing in this country. Korea's story of the Catholic faith is very unique, and we can't wait to learn more along the way.
The next World Youth Day will be: August 3-8, 2027
Archdiocese of Galveston Houston Trip: July 30-August 10, 2027 The Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston trip offers a few extra days to visit the Mirinae Holy Ground and Chon Jin Am, two important sites in the life of St. Andrew Kim.
"Take Courage! I have overcome the world." -John 16:33
Pope Francis chose John 16:33 as the theme for World Youth Day Seoul 2027. This verse, spoken by Jesus to his disciples at the Last Supper, reminds us of the irrevocable truth that despite the challenges of the world, Christ has already conquered fear, sin, and death. It is a call to hope and courage rooted in faith in the resurrection—not a passive optimism, but a bold confidence grounded in the living presence of Christ.
Young people across the globe today are confronted with a wide range of challenges, including conflicts, economic hardship, and an uncertain future. Thankfully, at WYD Seoul 2027, they can receive the joy of becoming the “salt of the earth and the light of the world.” Through their encounters with one another they will experience unconditional love, thereby gaining the strength to be sent back out into the world as “pilgrims of hope” and “courageous missionaries,” boldly putting into practice the joy of the Gospel they have discovered.
