Archbishop Joe S. Vásquez welcomes Pope Leo XIV

Sisters and brothers,

We just received the joyous news from Vatican City – we have a successor to St. Peter! Robert Francis Cardinal Prevost, who had served as Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops and president of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America, is the very first from the United States of America to be elected Pope. The Holy Father has taken the name Leo XIV.

In the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, we were truly privileged to have our own Cardinal DiNardo in Rome representing our local and universal Church during the Papal Conclave. I know he carried us in his heart during this process. We are confident the Holy Spirit guided Cardinal DiNardo and all the Cardinal electors in this decision.

I ask the faithful of our Archdiocese and all people of goodwill to pray for Pope Leo XIV, that he may be a joyful servant of the Gospel and have the compassionate heart of the Good Shepherd, Jesus Christ. May God bless the Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV! Ad multos annos!

Acabamos de recibir la feliz noticia del Vaticano: ¡tenemos sucesor de San Pedro! Robert Francis Cardenal Prevost, quien fuera Prefecto del Dicasterio para los Obispos y presidente de la Pontificia Comisión para América Latina, es el primer Papa de Estados Unidos. El Santo Padre ha adoptado el nombre de León XIV.

En la Arquidiócesis de Galveston-Houston, tuvimos el verdadero privilegio de tener a nuestro propio Cardenal DiNardo en Roma, representando a nuestra Iglesia local y universal durante el Cónclave Papal. Sé que nos llevó en su corazón durante este proceso. Estamos seguros de que el Espíritu Santo guió al Cardenal DiNardo y a todos los Cardenales electores en esta decisión.

Pido a los fieles de nuestra Arquidiócesis y a todas las personas de buena voluntad que oren por el Papa León XIV, para que sea un servio alegre del Evangelio y tenga el corazón compasivo del Buen Pastor, Jesucristo. ¡Que Dios bendiga al Santo Padre, el Papa León XIV! ¡Ad multos annos!

Chúng ta vừa nhận được tin vui từ Vatican – Giáo Hội có Đức tân Giáo Hoàng đấng kế vị Thánh Phêrô! Nguyên là Hồng Y Robert Francis Prevost cựu Giám Mục Giáo Phận Chiclayo, Peru; Tổng Trưởng Thánh Bộ Giám Mục; Chủ Tịch Hội Đồng Giáo Hoàng về Châu Mỹ Latinh. Đức tân Thánh Cha nhận tên hiệu Leo XIV.

Tổng giáo phận Galveston-Houston của chúng ta thật vinh dự khi có Đức Hồng Y DiNardo hiện đang ở Rome đại diện cho Giáo hội địa phương và hoàn vũ tham dự Mật Nghị Hồng Y. Tôi biết, trong tâm tưởng, ngài đang nhớ đến chúng ta trong những ngày này.  Chúng ta tin rằng Chúa Thánh Thần đã hướng dẫn Đức Hồng Y DiNardo và tất cả các Hồng Y cử tri trong quyết định lựa chọn vị tân Giáo Hoàng.

Tôi xin các anh chị em tín hữu của Tổng Giáo Phận và tất cả những người thành tâm thiện chí cầu nguyện cho Đức Giáo Hoàng Leo XIV để ngài là một Tôi Tớ tươi vui của Tin Mừng và có một trái tim nhân hậu của Đức Giêsu Kitô, Đấng Chăn Chiên Lành.
