A Shepherd's Message - Advent 2025

“Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight His paths.”

Dear brothers and sisters, 

We will celebrate Gaudete Sunday on Dec. 14. As we reach the halfway point of Advent, we are reminded that this season is a gift, a sacred time of waiting and preparation for the coming of Christ. Advent often passes quickly amid the busyness of our lives, but these remaining days offer us a beautiful opportunity to pause, reflect and grow in love and hope. The Lord invites us to prepare our hearts so that we may welcome Him with joy at Christmas and look forward to His coming again.  

Advent calls us to watchfulness and prayer. These spiritual practices help us recognize God’s presence in the ordinary moments of our daily lives. When we take time to pray, to listen, and to be attentive, we begin to see the many ways the Lord is near: through His Word, in the Eucharist, and in the faces of those around us. This awareness deepens our gratitude for the gift of salvation and strengthens our hope in Christ, who is our light in the darkness.  

In a world filled with distractions, we must be intentional about creating space for God. Simple steps can make a profound difference: setting aside time each day for prayer, reading Scripture, attending Mass or spending quiet moments before the Blessed Sacrament. We can also practice gratitude by reflecting on the blessings in our lives and through acts of kindness with others. These acts of love and watchfulness prepare our hearts to celebrate the birth of Jesus with true joy.  

During Advent, let us also turn to the Blessed Mother, who teaches us how to wait with faith and humility. Praying the Rosary or reflecting on the mysteries of Mary’s life can help us draw closer to her Son and embrace the hope that Advent brings.  

May this Advent be a time of renewal for each of us, a season to draw closer to Christ, to love more deeply, and to live with joyful anticipation of His coming. Let us embrace these remaining days with hope and faith, trusting that the Lord is with us and will never fail to fulfill His promises.  c

In these final weeks of Advent, know that I am praying for all of you in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, especially those who are marginalized, experience loneliness or in need. May the peace of Christ fill your hearts and homes this Advent and Christmas season. †

“Preparen el camino del Señor, enderecen sus sendas.” 

Queridos hermanos y hermanas:

Celebraremos el Domingo de Gaudete el 14 de diciembre. Al llegar a la mitad del Adviento, recordamos que este tiempo es un regalo, un período sagrado de espera y preparación para la venida de Cristo. El Adviento transcurre rápidamente entre las ocupaciones de nuestra vida, pero estos días que quedan nos ofrecen una hermosa oportunidad para hacer una pausa, reflexionar y crecer en amor y esperanza. El Señor nos invita a preparar nuestros corazones para que podamos acogerlo con alegría en Navidad y esperar con anhelo Su regreso.

El Adviento nos invita a la vigilancia y a la oración. Estas prácticas espirituales nos ayudan a reconocer la presencia de Dios en los momentos cotidianos de nuestra vida diaria. Cuando dedicamos tiempo a orar, escuchar y estar atentos, comenzamos a ver las muchas formas en que el Señor está cerca: a través de Su Palabra, en la Eucaristía y en los rostros de quienes nos rodean. Esta conciencia profundiza nuestra gratitud por el don de la salvación y fortalece nuestra esperanza en Cristo, quien es nuestra luz en la oscuridad.

En un mundo lleno de distracciones, debemos ser intencionales al crear espacio para Dios. Pequeños pasos pueden hacer una diferencia profunda: reservar un momento cada día para la oración, leer la Sagrada Escritura, asistir a Misa o pasar momentos de silencio ante el Santísimo Sacramento. También podemos practicar la gratitud reflexionando sobre las bendiciones en nuestra vida y realizando actos de bondad hacia los demás. Estos actos de amor y vigilancia preparan nuestros corazones para celebrar el nacimiento de Jesús con verdadera alegría.

Durante el Adviento, volvamos también nuestra mirada a la Santísima Madre, quien nos enseña a esperar con fe y humildad. Rezar el Rosario o meditar en los misterios de la vida de María puede ayudarnos a acercarnos más a su Hijo y a abrazar la esperanza que trae el Adviento.

Que este Adviento sea un tiempo de renovación para cada uno de nosotros, una temporada para acercarnos más a Cristo, amar con mayor profundidad y vivir con gozosa anticipación de Su venida. Abracemos estos días restantes con esperanza y fe, confiando en que el Señor está con nosotros y nunca dejará de cumplir Sus promesas.

En estas últimas semanas de Adviento, sepan que rezo por todos ustedes en la Arquidiócesis de Galveston-Houston, especialmente por aquellos que están marginados, experimentan soledad o están en necesidad. Que la paz de Cristo llene sus corazones y hogares en esta temporada de Adviento y Navidad.
