Archbishop Vásquez’s statement on Bishop Mario Avilés

Upon the announcement of the appointment of Most Reverend Mario A. Avilés, C.O., as the ninth Bishop of the Diocese of Corpus Christi, Archbishop Joe S. Vásquez, Archbishop of Galveston-Houston, shared this statement:

"On behalf of Daniel Cardinal DiNardo, Bishop Italo Dell’Oro, the priests, religious, deacons, and lay faithful of the Archdiocese of Galveston–Houston, I express gratitude to the Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV, for appointing the Most Reverend Mario A. Avilés, C.O., as the ninth Bishop of the Diocese of Corpus Christi.

For the past seven years, I have known Bishop Avilés as a faithful brother bishop in Texas during his service as Auxiliary Bishop of Brownsville. He is a man of prayer and pastoral charity, and I am confident he will serve the people of Corpus Christi well as their Shepherd. 

I also express my appreciation to Bishop Michael Mulvey for his more than fifteen years of devoted pastoral leadership.

Please join me in praying for Bishop Avilés, Bishop Mulvey, and all of the faithful in the Diocese of Corpus Christi."
